A large B2B energy supplier faced significant exposure to settlement costs as they prepared for Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) – with potential annual risks exceeding ~£75m.

Through BFY’s MHHS Readiness Assessment, we identified critical gaps across their strategy, processes, and operations. By addressing these proactively, we helped the client reduce risk, improve readiness, and design a roadmap for sustained post-go-live performance.

Challenge

MHHS presents some of the most transformative changes to the UK energy industry in recent years.

Our client wanted confidence that their systems, processes and people were ready for the challenges MHHS brings. We partnered with the supplier to ensure comprehensive steps were taken to protect future performance and avoid risk both commercially and compliance wise.

Approach

Our MHHS Readiness Assessment aimed to identify key gaps in the supplier’s planning and readiness activity to date.

To achieve this, we applied our assessment methodology, using 156 different criteria across 33 subcategories, covering 5 key lenses:

  • Process
  • Strategy
  • People
  • Product
  • Partners

Outcome

Through stakeholder interviews, observations, assessments of plans, data analysis and investigation of key processes, our comprehensive report identified a ~£75m risk to settlement performance.

As a result of this, an improvement plan was designed to:

  • Ensure smooth customer experience through MHHS migration
  • Implement best in class meter read strategies, minimising partner costs and driving billing accuracy
  • Redesign processes to exceed BAU targets and improve current performance
  • Increase engagement and operational buy in, ensuring that everyone understands the change and can articulate the impact to customers
  • Identify key work items requiring cleansing ahead of migration, to reduce customer impact and minimise operational impact
